PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The Brighton High School Philharmonic Orchestra serves as the preparatory ensemble for the Chamber Orchestra. Members of this orchestra have a strong technical foundation and work ethic. Members of this orchestra are encouraged, but not required to, take private lessons and to audition for All-State Orchestra.

Recommended Level of Ability: It is recommended that all members of this orchestra play with solid intonation, and be able to perform 3 octave C Major, G Major and D Major scales and 2 octave minor scales up to 5 sharps and flats. This means students are comfortable playing in 3rd position. Students should have a beginning knowledge of vibrato. It is highly encouraged that all Philharmonic Orchestra Members take private lessons.

Bow Techniques: Students should be able to demonstrate correct detache’, legato, marcato, staccato, and spiccato bow strokes.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

The Brighton High School Chamber Orchestra is our highest performing ensemble. Many members of this group take private lessons and have previously been members of Region & All-State Orchestra in Middle and High School. Students in the Chamber group are required to audition for High School All-State every year.

Recommended Level of Ability: It is assumed that all students in Chamber play with proper bow and left hand technique, and vibrato. Students in this group play with exceptional intonation and perform complex rhythms accurately and can execute successfully with a metronome. Students can perform 3 octave major and minor scales through 5 sharps and 5 flats. This means students are comfortable playing in 3rd & 5th positions and higher. The expectation is that all Chamber Orchestra members take private lessons. As well, members will be asked to consider being a part of the school musical each year.

Bow Techniques: Students should be able to demonstrate correct detache’, legato, marcato, staccato, spiccato, col legno and ricochet bow strokes.
